ENCARNACIÓN GUTIÉRREZ-RODRÍGUEZ

Is Senior Lecturer in Transcultural Studies at the University of Manchester. Her research can be placed at the juncture of Critical Migration, Gender, Queer and Postcolonial Studies. Within the area of critical migration studies she has developed a transcultural studies approach. She is co-director of the Migration and Diaspora Cultural Studies Network, a network that brings together scholars across the Humanities in Manchester and the North West, now working together with RICC. She studied Sociology, Political Sciences and Romance Studies at the University of Frankfurt, Germany, Université Lumière II, Lyon and Quito, Ecuador. She did her PhD at the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University and in the DFG funded postgraduate programme “Social Change and Gender Relations” at the University of Dortmund, on the intersections of gender, ethnicity and migration in contemporary German society. She was Assistant Professor in the Department of Sociology at the University of Hamburg and Research Co-ordinator at the International Womens University in Hanover. Her monograph on Intellektuelle Migrantinnen. Subjektivitäten im Zeitalter von Globalisierung (1999, Female Migrant Intellectuals. Subjectivities in the times of Globalization) was awarded the “Augsburger Wissenschaftspreis für Interkulturelle Studien”. Her publications Migration, Domestic Work and Affect (2010), Decolonizing European Sociology (2010, with M. Boatc and S. Costa) Spricht die Subalterne Deutsch? Migration und Postkoloniale Kritik (2003, with Hito Steyerl); Gouvernementalität (2003, with Marianne Pieper), Borders, Homes and Migration (2004, with Luzenir Caixeta, Shirley Anne Tate and Cristina Vega Solís) and the special journal issue “Method after Foucault” (2007) in Forum: Qualitative Social Research reflect some ofher  areas of research.
