The idea of a (post) memorial condition alludes to a cultural perception of time that permanently projects the past into the present and looks to its ruins not as a disengaged past but rather as a radical vivid ‘surviving’ culture. This course elaborates on the political and inter-subjective consequences of the idea of restoring social memory by means of aesthetic strategies. Once we assumed that memory has become a sort of obsession and a symptom of our traumatized global culture, we are compelled to analyze the ethical and political interplays between historical memory and aesthetic representation. During the course, we will analyze the interplay between memory and diverse historical episodes such as the ‘decolonial’ movements occurred during the seventies, the intercultural debates experienced during the eighties on the post-Holocaust legacies, or the various globally tele-visualized genocides which follow the civil war in Ruanda.
Taking into consideration the abovementioned case studies, guest speakers will refer to museums, monuments and memories not as mere objects or imaginaries but rather as ‘sites’ for the renegotiation of local and global memories. Finally, putting over the table the idea of the post-global memory, this course will elaborate on new institutions such as the ‘memorial museums’ as well as on the institutionalization and representability of ‘cultural memory’.
